This couplet is a collection from the inscription on the bronze tripod Mao Gong ding, conveying philosophical wisdom from the ancients: ‘virtue lies in friendship, goodness lies in respecting teachers’. The artistic depth of Chinese calligraphy stems from its rich philosophical and cultural connotations. It serves as a window into the calligrapher’s very being, unveiling their spirit, education, character and sentiments. Jat See-yeu saw beyond a mere craft into calligraphy’s deeper purpose—its ability to nurture one’s character and self-reflection. He aimed to elevate his art into a manifestation of virtue and wisdom, reaching the pinnacle of the art of calligraphy.
