This SPARKLE by KAREN CHAN x HKMoA original pattern is inspired by the Famille Rose Two Color Overlay Magpie & Plum Blossom Motif (胭脂水地套二色玻璃刻喜雀梅花圖) snuff bottle in HKMoA’s priceless “Fuyun Xuan Collection” of snuff bottles. A plum branch, a magpie’s call, a stroke of spring – this design distills the timeless wish and blessing encoded in this Qing dynasty snuff bottle, with a magpie alighting on a plum branch symbolizing “joy rising to the eyebrows” (喜上眉梢).

Glass; of pear shape, on the rouge colored-body is overlaid in black with magpies and leafy twigs while the plum blossoms are in red. The depiction is a continuous pictorial composition covering all around the entire surface.

As evident on the treatment of the neck, it can be ascertained that the bottle blank is of the sandwich glass type, having a layer of transparent coating wrapping over a rouge-colored core. The motif of magpies and plum trees is the popular auspicious omen of “having happiness rising to the eyebrows (喜上眉稍).
