PRUNUS BLOSSOMS

This SPARKLE by KAREN CHAN x HKMoA original pattern is inspired by the “Ruby-Transparent Glass Snuff Bottle with Inlaid Prunus Blossoms (透明紅玻璃鑲嵌梅花圖)  from the HKMoA’s "Fuyun Xuan Collection", reinterpreting its inlaid prunus blossoms—a symbol of resilience in Chinese art—through a contemporary fashion lens.
.
Delicate mother-of-pearl motifs dissolve into an abstract pattern, with crimson translucency echoing the glass’s gem-like depth. The design’s rhythmic asymmetry mirrors the snuff bottle’s organic composition, and utilizes frost-white negative space to honor the "Three Friends of Winter" motif (prunus, pine, bamboo), reinterpreted here as modern negative-space artistry.

(透明紅玻璃鑲嵌梅花圖)
.
Glass; of circular form, embellished on both surfaces to depict a spreading spray of prunus blossoms issuing from rock works with mother-of-pearl and stones. Mask and ring handles are carved on the narrow sides.
.
Height: 4.93 cm
1820-1910
.
The glass color of this bottle is of ruby-red simulating that of the stone. For their resilience against the snowy weather, the prunus together with pine and bamboo are traditionally known as the “three friends of winter”. The flowers of prunus stay in full bloom throughout the winter season despite snowy weather.
