This couplet conveys the philosophical wisdom of the ancients: ‘Handle matters with integrity, reject force’. The artistic depth of Chinese calligraphy stems from its rich philosophical and cultural connotations. It serves as a window into the calligrapher’s very being, unveiling their spirit, cultivation, character and sentiments. Jat See-yeu saw beyond a mere craft into calligraphy’s deeper purpose—its ability to nurture one’s character and self-reflection. He aimed to elevate his art into a manifestation of virtue and wisdom, reaching the pinnacle of the art of calligraphy.
