Lui Shou-kwan’s Zen paintings were primarily inspired by lotus flowers which are depicted with free splashes of ink. In this work, the lotus leaves are broad ink strokes and blocks, while the red spot at the centre symbolises the purity of the lotus flower. The varying textures and shades of ink are a stimulating contrast with the empty space.
