YELLOW FLORAL GOURD

This SPARKLE by KAREN CHAN x HKMoA original pattern is inspired by the Yellow Glass Painted Enamel Floral Motif (黃玻璃畫琺瑯花卉圖) snuff bottle in HKMoA’s priceless “Fuyun Xuan Collection” of snuff bottles. This Qianlong-era (1735–1796) snuff bottle has a unique gourd-shaped body adorned with imperial yellow ground, reserved for the court, and vibrant peonies, chrysanthemums, and plum blossoms symbolizing nobility and resilience.
.
This SPARKLE by KAREN CHAN x HKMoA original design casts a play of light and shimmer with gleaming gold and deep obsidian, and reimagines these motifs into a radiant starburst pattern, where each point of light echoes the gourd’s traditional symbolism of eternal vitality in Chinese culture. A tribute to the hidden artistry and profound sentiment woven into history, the composition captures both the opulence of the past and the timeless dance of fortune and renewal.

Undoubtedly, this bottle is originated from the Imperial Glass Workshop located within the Beijing Palace Compound and supervised by the expatriate missionaries. The exclusive yellow color restricted for the use of the Royal family members in the entire background is a valid evidence to vindicate its designation. Moreover, the elegant double gourd form and the fine enameled depiction of the floral motif are additional supporting factors.
