Lui Shou-kwan’s Zen paintings reached their peak during the 1970s when he used abstract forms to channel his thoughts and emotions. Although the composition in Lui’s Zen paintings bears a likeness to Western abstract art, the atmosphere conjured by ink and its philosophical connotations are unparalleled. It reflects not only his perceptive study of traditional and modern painting, but also his creative choices that eventually formed his very own style.
