Xie Zhiliu had a lifelong devotion to the subject of bamboo. Often sketching in bamboo groves near his home—and even naming his studio Kuhuangzhai ("Bitter Bamboo Studio"苦篁齋) after repeated, earnest attempts to cultivate them—Xie transformed his deep passion into poetic strength upon paper. Rendered using the boneless (mogu) technique, this masterpiece showcases alternating shades of deep and pale ink with deftly balanced leaf clusters, capturing a spirited, refined elegance in the play of presence and void.
