TANG SANCAI 唐三彩
Tang sancai (three-colour glaze) represents the most radiant colour language of High Tang craft aesthetics. As the glaze flows, mingles, and sets under intense heat, it gives form to one of the most iconic artistic symbols of the Tang civilisation. This pattern takes its inspiration from Tang sancai ware, deconstructing the ceramic motifs — baoxiang flowers, petal-shaped cartouches, and other ornamentation — into standalone, striking visual emblems.

The pattern is inspired by the Tang sancai antiquities on display at the “Prosperity and Magnificence - Civilisation of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Shaanxi Province” Exhibition of the HK Museum of History. The pattern unfolds through four-way repeats and a diagonal matrix structure, building an infinitely expanding geometric network — just like the majestic High Tang civilisation radiating outwards in all directions. Each totemic unit stands as an independent, complete composition, yet together they form a boundless visual field, evoking the magnificent spectacle of Chang'an, where myriad cultures converged and interwove in the glory of a flourishing empire.
