2nd Runner-Up - LOOK 7 by SHEK CHING YIU
My design draws inspiration from the iconic Hong Kong comic "13-Dot" (十三點), blending its retro aesthetic and social commentary into a unique fashion narrative. The use of red-white-blue printed fabric and denim reflects the diversity and energy of Hong Kong culture, while the color combinations echo the distinct personalities of the comic’s characters and the city’s innovative spirit.
Denim lends a streetwear edge and wearability to the design, balancing artistic expression with everyday functionality. This design reinterprets 1960s Western mini skirts with cheongsam-inspired elements, using vibrant color contrasts, intricate layering, and intricate prints to create a contemporary yet nostalgic visual impact.
I chose playful elements from "13-Dot," such as a dog-shaped pocket and a matching patterned strap, to compliment the comic’s fashion-forward sensibility. The lace-trimmed skirt appears simple at a glance but is meticulously constructed, each lace edge is shaped into pointed details, and three different fabrics are layered and stitched repeatedly to achieve depth and texture. My design is not only a tribute to Hong Kong’s comic heritage but also a celebration of its cultural hybridity and creative vitality.
