Merit Prize - LOOK 1 by CHAN PUI YI
My design draws inspiration from the miniskirts of the 1960’s movie stars like Josephine Siao and Connie Chan, and the cheongsams worn by Maggie Cheung in the movie “In the Mood for Love”. Together, these elements evoke female empowerment and shifting gender dynamics, reflecting the transformation of modern femininity.
The black oversized round hat adds a touch of mystery and elegance, while the strong-shouldered cape emphasizes power and structure. A denim strap under the arm blends modern and classic influences.
The collar is accentuated with traditional flower buttons, fusing Eastern elegance and Chinese cultural fusion. I used the color red to pay homage to the factory women of the ’60s, particularly those at the iconic Red A Plastic Factory, symbolizing their vital role in industry and economy.
This look is a tribute to the enduring spirit and rising influence of women throughout Hong Kong history.
