Merit Prize - LOOK 8 by WONG MEI YI
My design uses rattan baskets and hats to symbolize both cultural exchange and feminine resilience. Inspired by Wang Anshi’s poem praising the winter plum blossom—a metaphor for strength and beauty in adversity—my design integrates Chinese paper-cutting art, featuring delicate plum motifs that reflect both Eastern heritage and Western aesthetic sensibilities.
My design reinterprets the 1960s coats and mini skirts, with layered vests showcasing openwork paper-cut patterns. Rattan accessories and plastic flowers evoke Hong Kong’s floral manufacturing history, where many women supported their families through the plastic flower trade. The three-piece set includes a tailored coat in red-white-blue oilcloth with denim lining, a ballet-inspired skirt, and a versatile vest.
Emphasizing sustainability and versatility, each piece can be mixed and matched with everyday wear. The collection honors the enduring spirit of women across cultures, blending tradition with contemporary functionality and storytelling.
