WINNER - LOOK 10 by XIE HO YIN

 

Inspired by Hong Kong’s iconic movie “In the Mood for Love”, my design blends the sophistication of the traditional cheongsam with the fluid imagery of a goldfish. Deep blue fabric forms the foundation, reflecting both the film’s restrained emotional tone and the tranquil grace of goldfish in water. The Mandarin collar, flower buttons and form-fitting silhouette highlight Eastern elegance, while contemporary Western tailoring and a mermaid-inspired hem create a dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Goldfish motifs are intricately incorporated through embroidery, print, or hand-painting, flowing dynamically from the collar to the hem to evoke a sense of movement and vitality. Lustrous silk or satin emulates the shimmer of water, layered with sheer fabrics to enhance depth and fluidity. The fusion of Eastern structure and Western volume emphasizes the feminine form, with touches of vibrant color contrasting against the blue base to symbolize life and possibility.

More than a garment, my design is a cultural statement—melding the nostalgia of “In the Mood for Love”, the symbolic fortune of goldfish, and a harmonious East-West aesthetic, celebrating both heritage and innovation, transforming clothing into an artistic and meaningful expression.
